cleanBeach/Jetty Clean-Up

Sunday, 2/10/13

8:00 am to Noon

South Pointe Park, Miami, FL

Time to give back to this wonderful sport we love and the Ocean which makes it all possible! Join UU and DEP as they clean the waters and beach area on the North Jetty wall closest to the Jose Cuervo Bar Artificial Reef.

There’s trash floating and submerged along the Jetty, and immediately north of it. Teams will scour the area plus head out around the Jose Cuervo Bar. We’re asking for your help in collecting as much garbage as possible to clean up the environment we love so much, then feel free to hang out on the beach afterwards.

THE PLAN:

Arrive and park at the Eastern most corner of South Pointe Park, (1 Washington Avenue, by Smith & Wolensky’s) at 7:30 am. We will stage here as everyone arrives and gets geared up. After a dive briefing of the area and review of clean up procedures with the Marine Debris Program coordinator from the Department of Environmental Protection Coral Reef Conservation Program, we will head off, fully suited up, to the shore line. Attendees not diving can target the beach, shore and jetty for trash (don’t forget those cigarette butts!) Divers will search the depths by the jetty, surrounding waters, and by the Jose Cuervo Bar artificial reef. After completion, we will have an official weigh in of debris to get a total and determine our top prize collector!

Once you’ve completed the clean up; all are invited to for some fun in the sun socializing. Bring your own food and beverages (FYI – no cooking or glass) and more cylinders to fun dive the Jetty wall, Jose Cuervo, or swim out to JJ’s South Reef.

Free cylinder rentals or a free air fill (for those who own their cylinders) to use on this event. We will also have a prize for: MOST SUBMERGED TRASH, MOST BEACH TRASH and person who BRINGS THE MOST FRIENDS to help!

*Call Underwater Unlimited to register so we know how many clean-up kits to bring.
